For this silk twill square, we chose 'The Dance Class' by Edgar Degas. This artwork, along with its variant at the Musée d'Orsay, represents some of Degas' most ambitious paintings focused on the theme of dance. Around twenty-four women, ballerinas and their mothers, wait while a dancer performs an 'attitude' for her exam. Jules Perrot, the famous ballet master, directs the class. The imaginary scene takes place in a rehearsal room of the former Paris Opera, which had recently been completely destroyed by fire. On the wall next to the mirror, a poster of Rossini's William Tell pays tribute to the singer Jean-Baptiste Faure, who commissioned the painting and lent it to the 1876 Impressionist exhibition.
