For this wool and silk shawl, we chose the painting La Sieste by Paul Gauguin, painted in 1879. Paul Gauguin is one of the great French post-impressionist painters. His constant desire to push further, to discover new territories, reflects a constant need to perfect his artistic practice. His stays in Pont-Aven, Martinique, Tahiti, and the Marquesas Islands fed him and, in return, nourished his art. La Sieste is an iconic painting from his Tahitian cycle. The original grace and communal life of Tahitian women made a strong impression on Gauguin. The artist worked extensively on this canvas and made several changes. The skirt of the woman in the foreground was originally bright red, and a dog occupied the space now taken by the basket in the lower right corner.
